With
New Year celebrations and the National Day of Service (MLK day) behind us, I
want to encourage Anchorage residents to resolve to make volunteering a habit.
(Congratulations if you already have.) Volunteering benefits the community and
is associated with physical health, psychological well-being, and life
satisfaction among volunteers.
Unfortunately,
in recent years many volunteer organizations have seen a decrease in
membership. As their members have aged, younger adults have not taken their
places. Yet, if you ask these venerable volunteers when they joined many will
tell you they did so as young adults or in midlife -- some 20, 30 or even 40
years prior. The spirit of volunteerism is real, substantive and durable. It
can serve to balance today's fleeting joys of Internet media and miniaturized
digital devices.
So,
join a service organization such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Soroptimists, or Lions
Club and volunteer. These organizations want new members and new ideas. You
just might find friendships and fulfillment as you build a better Anchorage. - Jaedon Avey

A group of nine University Kiwanians made it down to the Ship Creek platform on June 7, 2011 to spruce it up just a bit. A little
bit of sanding, scraping and touch up paint brought the platform back to a reasonable appearance. |

On Saturday June 4, 2011 the University Kiwanis once again undertook the "KIDS PHOTO IDENTIFICATION" project. Parents are invited to stop by our booth to receive a Kids Photo ID packet and a digital photograph of their child/children. The packet provides parents with a ready source of identification information should their child become missing and a search is beginning. Hopefully the kit will never be needed.

Saturday July 10, 2010. Five members of the University Kiwanis Club helped serve local children by participating in the Bear Paw Festival's annual Bike Rodeo and Kid's Photo Identification Projects. We helped fit bike helmets donated by the State of Alaska with help from employees of State Farm Insurance in Eagle River.
